Anne Rice books so far

by janet on March 24, 2008

I started the Anne Rice book on the life of Jesus. While I have found it to be interesting so far I also noticed that she has taken some of the history and told it according to "Catholic History". One of the first things I noticed is that she took the known brother of Jesus who is named James and made him into an older brother who is only a half brother (although not really even that). She tells the story as if James is the son of Joseph from a previous marraige and therefore not really a blood relative of Jesus. Most of the things I have read about James have called him a child of Mary and therefor born after Jesus. She also "erased" all of his other siblings. The bible names James and several sisters of Jesus who would have been born after Jesus. In the book, Anne Rice uses what are believed to be names given as names of his sisters and uses them to name several of his cousins. The reasoning behind this is that in Catholicsm Mary is believed to have remained a virgin her whole life. Most other Christian faiths believe that Jesus was a product of an Immaculate Conception but do not believe that Mary stayed a virgin her whole life. It has been historically shown that Mary in fact did have other children who would have been younger siblings of Jesus. She also makes Joseph and Jesus specifically "carpenters". It has now been proven that they were most likely not actual woodworkers but stone workers. The word used in the bible was translated as carpenter but actually meant "hand worker" which more likely was someone who worked with stone. I realize that her books are fiction and therefore do not have to be historically correct. I also realize that Anne Rice is in fact a Catholic and so her stories would reflect her beliefs. I am just used to her books being very historically correct and so it catches my eye when she has written things that aren’t really historical. So far so good though. I will give you guys a full review once I am done with the book.
