Book choices for going green

by janet on April 23, 2008

I figured that I would give you guys some book choices that are related to the environment and going green since this week is Earth Day. I did some research and I found something for just about everyone. Some of these I can’t wait to get and read since we are on a voyage to try to make some major changes in our household to lessen our carbon footprint. I think that is what they call it now. We have so much trash that we are single handedly destroying the earth with that alone. Add to it the plastic containers we drink from that we put in the dishwasher and release all of those fumes and we are one bad family. So I am starting my reading this week and we will see where it leads. Here are the books I came up with that I thought looked the most interesting:

1. Big Green Purse: Use Your Spending Power to Create a Cleaner, Greener World This is a book targeted at getting women to use their power as a spending giant to make changes in the world. The idea is that if women make changes to the types of purchases they make and focus on cleaner and greener products then the greatest results will be seen. Women make up the largest percentage of shoppers and so they have a huge amount of control in telling merchants what they want. I think this book has the absolute right idea. Great economics, great environmentalism, great results.

2. Organic Housekeeping: In Which the Non-Toxic Avenger Shows You How to Improve Your Health and That of Your Family, While You Save Time, Money, and, Perhaps, Your Sanity This is a fabulous book that shows you how to clean your home using everyday natural ingredients instead of the toxic cleaners we are used to using. Some of the ingredients they suggest are vinegar, lemon, vodka, and olive oil. This is fabulous for those people who are not only concerned about the environment but also concerned about exposing your family to the toxins and fumes in cleaners.

It’s Easy Being Green: A Handbook for Earth-Friendly Living This final book is a great reference for finding alternative ways to protect the earth’s natural resources. It goes beyond merely recycling bottles and cans. This book provides 250 Eco-friendly ideas for helping to save the environment. Useful, helpful and easy to read.

Now is the time to start working on doing your part to make small changes that can help to protect the environment. Good luck and have fun!
