I am on a mission to keep my oldest daughter interested in books over the summer. My thoughts are that she is not going to want to sit inside and read when the weather is so nice outside. While it is not as great as actually reading the books I am going to try audio books.
I am buying her a Ipod shuffle for her graduation from kindergarten and then I am going to download audio books from itunes on to it for her. She can wear her ipod outside while she is playing. This will at least get her interested in some new books. I figure that by the time she is finished she will want to actually read these books and we can make that her mission for at night when she is going to sleep.
I got her ipod from the Apple store because they really have wonderful customer service. They not only carry the new ipods but you can get the refurbished ones for a fraction of the cost. All reports I have heard are that the refurbished ones are wonderful. They work well and last a long time. It is something to check out if you are looking for one for someone who has never used an ipod and you want to check them out.
Hopefully this little experiment of mine will inspire my child to want to read more books. It is so hard these days to incorporate the technology they love with the learning they need. I will let you guys know how this one works.

Let us know how it goes. I plan to make sure we continue working on all of our school skills including reading this summer as my daughter almost struggled this year, and I don’t want her to lose much over the summer. Would love to know if you find this effective.

How about picnicing outside under a tree with her and both of you reading a book? I use to love sitting outside under the trees in my yard and reading a good book on a blanket. Might be something to try.
