Raising a lover of books

May 1st, 2008 · 3 Comments

Today when I picked up my 6 year old from school I realized that she IS her mother’s daughter. She is a lover of books. She is constantly trying to read everything she can get her hands on. It makes me so happy to see her enjoying reading so much.

So today she gets in the car and tells me that they had a speaker in class today from the local library. She said that they told her that she could go to the library and they would give her a library card and allow her to check out books and keep them for "3 WEEKS". She was so excited to hear that. She said that at school they only get to keep the books for 1 week. Her eyes were lit up and you would swear that they had told her that she could take any toy she wanted home.

It feels like a rite of passage but next week we are going to go to the library and get her a library card. I don’t really remember when I first got my card and truthfully the library isn’t really a place I spend a lot of time. Reading wasn’t emphasized when I was growing up though so that may be the reason I never spent much time there. I am planning on changing that with my kids.

I learned that they have a bunch of really great FREE summer programs for children. The library of today is nothing like the one of my youth. They have so much more to do than just looking for books. I highly recommend that everyone check out their local library and see what they have to offer.

OMG I loved summer reading programs at the library growing up. Most of the ones I went too were book readings in the afternoon or book reading contests. The EBR Parish system had a thing where you could sign up to read all summer long and had different levels so like reading 25 books = $5 at McDonald’s or something similar. I wonder if they still do it. It really got me into reading.

Congrats on getting her excited about reading. Its something that she will enjoy her entire life.

I always signed up for the summer reading program at our library while growing up and Cameron is already going too. This is definitly something parents should look into for all children.

Oh, yes, definitely take her to the library and spend time there. I started taking my kids once a week when they were small. My son would check out stacks and stacks of books, read them all, and be ready for more every week. He still does, though his books have gotten longer and take a little longer to read.

Summer reading programs are great. The kids have so much fun at our library. They bring in entertainers and animals and all kinds of things. Also the kids keep track of the books or minutes they read and get prizes at the end of the summer. Our library runs programs for the kids, teens, and the adults, so everyone can get involved.
