Creating an outside book nook

by janet on May 2, 2008

My husband and I have been doing some outside remodeling lately. This includes landscaping, putting in a cement driveway and patio, the children’s play area and building planter boxes. It was during this remodel that I decided that I absolutely needed an outside book nook. An area where I can go sit and read my books while the children are playing and relax.

I have decided that a small area that will fit a lounge chair and side table would be the best. It is going to have brick pavers as a floor and some lattice around the sides that I can grow vines on to shade the sun. I can add an umbrella when it gets really hot. I will be able to relax on the lounge chair and read and have iced tea or lemonade and still be able to see the kids playing.

I have needed a place like this for quite some time. Usually I am relegated to sitting on the side steps to read while they play. I have to keep getting up to check on them since their play area is in the back of the house. It is so hard to get involved in a book when you have to stop every couple of minutes to check on kids on the trampoline or on the play set or riding their bikes.

I really can’t wait until this things is built. I am so looking forward to this summer. It should be relaxing and educational and fun for all of us.
