Kids and the sex talk

May 29th, 2008 · No Comments

While watching Dr. Phil today I saw that they were working from a helpful book that can be used to teach your children about sex. The name of the book is What’s Love Got to Do with It: Talking with Your Kids about Sex by Dr. John Chirban. This book is a great resource for discussing sexuality with children. According to Dr. Chirban’s site his book shows you how to:

1. "Open lines of communication for the long term"

2. "Define your values so you can clearly convey them to your child"

3. "Mentor your child on sexual matters"

4. "Help your child understand the connections between sex, intimacy, and love"

The book helps parents to know what to say it. It also gives guidelines for the best time to start discussions with their children. Finally, Dr. Chirban has definite ideas about who should have conversations with the child based upon the child and the parent involved. His book also has sections to help parents understand their own beliefs and feelings about sexuality. I haven’t actually read this book yet but the reviews and information I have researched say that it is good place to start the conversation. The only think I would like to add is that parents should also take into account their religious beliefs and see how those factor in to Dr. Chirban’s plan. Since I haven’t read the book I do not know if he brings religious beliefs in to the plan or not. I would love to hear from parents who may have read the book and how well it worked for them.
