Beatrice’s Goat: Page McBrier

June 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Beatrice’s Goat was written by Page McBrier and Illustrated by Lori Lohstoeter is the story of a family in Uganda who receives a goat as part of aid from a project called Heifer Project International. As a result of that gift the family is able to sell the surplus milk for a profit and then used this money to send their child, Beatrice, to school. Beatrice went on to use the gift of education to get scholarships to American colleges where she recently graduated from. She plans to use her degrees to help her people. This story is so inspiring and really drives home the fact that one little action can change the lives of hundreds of people. Beatrice may end up helping so many more people with her degree. She dreamed of going to school as a child but never thought is was going to be possible. The author of this book donates a portion of its proceeds to the Heifer Project International so that more goats can be donated to families.  This is such an inspirational story for children. I would read it to them over and over as part of your library so that they can learn and remember the importance of helping other people. It also will help them to learn that even small things can make a difference. Enjoy!
