Are athletes cheating when they get Lasik?

June 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

I know to most this question sounds really silly. I mean, when I first read it I thought it was the silliest thing I had ever read. Apparently there is a group of people who think that athletes who get Lasik surgery to improve their eyesight are cheating. They liken it to using steroids to improve their performance. Athletes like Tiger Woods and now the fighter pilots in the US Airforce have had corrective eye surgery in order to help them see better. Is this cheating? In my opinion that is just silly. Lasik is not cheating it is using surgery to make their sight better. Steroids on the other hand are detrimental to your health, illegal and specifically performance enhancing. Lasik will only make them see better, not necessarily play better. I love that this surgery will now give people with bad eyesight the chance to fulfill dreams too. In the past people with bad eyesight could have never even considered being fighter pilots. Now it is within their reach. You can literally find Lasik surgeons in every state. There are doctors who do  Lasik in San Francisco, Texas, Louisiana, New York and every other state of the nation. The costs associated with Lasik have come down in recent years and many times you can finance your surgery. Now that it has become a common surgery it is easy to find doctors who have performed these surgeries on a daily basis. There is little risk and short recovery time with Lasik. I can’t imagine telling an athlete that they couldn’t play sports because they chose to have their eyesight corrected. That would be like saying that they can’t wear contacts or eyeglasses. This theory of it being cheating is just ridiculous.
