Hurricane Katrina 3rd Anniversary

June 23rd, 2008 · 2 Comments

August 28, 2008 will mark the 3rd Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. I thought that in preparation for that you guys might want a list of some of the many books that have been written in the past three years that are Katrina related. I have to say that the array of books in wonderful. I am interested in several of them but I haven’t gotten in to any of them yet because I felt I needed a little bit of space between the disaster and being able to objectively read a book on it. So here are just a few of the books I have found. Enjoy!

Hurricane Katrina by William Dudley

Come Hell or High Water : Hurricane Katrina and Natural, Racial and Economic Disasters by Michael Eric Dyson

The Storm : What Went Wrong and Why During Hurricane Katrina — The Inside Story from One Louisiana Scientist by Ivor Van Heerden, Mike Bryan

1 Dead in Attic : After Katrina by Chris Rose

The Great Deluge : Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast by Douglas Brinkley

Some of these books are quite political so I would make sure to check up on the reviews to see if the opinions are ones you are interested in reading. Over all I think the best one is The Great Deluge by Doug Brinkley. This book is much more neutral in its politics and covers more than just the New Orleans area. I also am partial to Chris Rose. He has a column in our local newspaper and I often find myself agreeing with him even when I don’t want to. Let me know if you guys read these or if you plan to. I would love to hear your thoughts!

Please see my children’s picture story book, Gullah, the Nawleans Cat Meets Katrina, the little book called “history in a teacup.” Written by a Florida hurricane victim for the children of Katrina, illustrated by MS artist, Sandy Ford, all 16 pictures painted in a FEMA trailor.
Signed copies available, special discounts. I’d love to be part of the 3rd anniversary event.
