Jon Agee: Nothing

June 24th, 2008 · No Comments

I was looking on the site for the American Library Association and found a book that I think would be a terrific book for kids. It is at the top of the list of most Notable children’s books of 2008. The title is Nothing and it was written by Jon Agee. This book is meant to teach children that money can’t buy everything and that excessive spending is so silly. The story is about a shop owner who has sold everything in his store when a very rich woman comes in. She wants to know what is for sale and when he says "Nothing" she promptly purchases it. She returns day after day to buy nothing and he sends her on to the other shop owners because he feels guilty for taking money for nothing. In the end the other shop owners don’t feel the same guilt and pass on their merchandise to the original shop owner because they want to make space to sell more nothing. The story is silly but it is a fabulous way to teach children about money, greed and over spending.
