Travel transportation decisions

July 7th, 2008 · No Comments

As many of you know I am a planner. I like to plan things to death and control every aspect of everything I can and then I try to control those I can’t. I have started planning our Disney trip that is over a year away. I want to be sure that I have made good decisions on everything so that we can have a great trip and not end up frazzled and broke. I have made most of the decisions that I can make this far out but one thing that is still bothering me is transportation.

We usually drive to Florida from our home in Louisiana using our own vehicles. This has worked for us in the past and we like the freedom of having a vehicle with us in Disney. What is the issue? Well gas is outrageous now and my husband drives a huge diesel truck. We could be in for a huge gas bill if we drive that to Florida. So I have been researching what options I might have in car rental instead. I figure there are two options I can take and I just need to decided which would be better for us.

The first option is to fly to Florida and then rent a car at the airport to use during our trip. While this would save time and money on gas I found that flights are going up at an astonishing rate also and we may not save much money this way.

The second option is to rent a more fuel efficient vehicle in Louisiana and take that one to Florida. This would me a lower gas bill and it also gets rid of the wear and tear on our personal cars. We could also get a more compact car since my husband has a dually with a crew cab. The truck was not so easy to park last time we took it. I noticed that Advantage Car Rentals has 50% off of luxury vehicles. I bet this would be a good way to get interior space for the ride without using the amount of gas or room his truck would take. I figure that it would also make the kids and I feel like we are traveling in style to be in a rental car instead of our own vehicle. They have so many deals and discounts that I am sure I can find something that would work for us and would save on the gas bill.

I am leaning towards doing this but now I just have to wait until closer to the trip so that I can check the prices at that time and also check the prices on fuel at that time. Hopefully they will go down but if not at least I feel like I have a Plan B in the wings for the trip.
