I heard about this movie during a sermon on Sunday at my church. I was intrigued by the story that it told and now I am deeply wanting to find the movie and watch it. The story told by this movie is one of faith and the courageous people who risk their lives to help bring other people to a knowledge of Christ.
This story is based up on a group of five missionaries who found out about a tribe in Ecuador in the 1950’s who had never been contacted by outside people. The people who had tried to contact them until now had all been killed. These missionaries believed that God was calling them to go to the village and teach them about Christianity. These missionaries are killed almost immediately upon arrive at the village. However, the story doesn’t end there. The wife and sister of two of the missionaries eventually go down to Ecuador and through the women of the tribe are able to make contact with the tribe. They learn the language and translate the bible in to their native language. They Christianize the whole tribe and live there until their deaths. The daughter of one of the women grows up in the village along with the other children.
In the end the villagers who killed their relatives seek forgiveness and end up becoming evangelists themselves. I think the most poignant thing for me that my pastor pointed out is that the son of one of the missionaries remembers asking his father before he left for the missions trip if he would use his gun on the villager if he was attacked. The response of the missionary, paraphrased, is "No son because I am ready to go to Heaven and he isn’t" This made me want to cry.
There is also a book on which the movie is based. It was written by Elisabeth Elliot the wife of one of the missionaries. The name of the book is Through Gates of Splendor and is available in most retail book outlets and also book clubs.
The name of the movie is End of The Spear and you can watch the trailer for the movie here http://www.endofthespear.com/. I plan on getting both of these this weekend and I will let you know what I think about it. Enjoy!
