Do I Cave to Peer Pressure?

September 12th, 2008 · No Comments

I came across another site today that discusses books and amusingly they were discussing something I was considering just last night. The site is called Booking Through Thursday and the question was whether or not I give in to the main stream at times and let peer pressure decide what I am going to read. My immediate response was to say "No Way!" However, I began to consider it and I have to admit that I do sometimes let this occur.

I am currently reading the Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Series simply because I just couldn’t stand not knowing what all of the hype is about. I felt like I could be missing a really interesting and quality piece of work. I have read the whole first book and now feel like I am not sorry I chose to read them. It certainly is not the best set of books I have ever read but then again there can only be one best so everything else I read will always be less than best. It is an entertaining set of books. The characters are interesting and keep my attention.

Another time when I succumbed to "peer pressure" was when I had a Friend tell me that I should start trying out chick lit. I finally decided to see what I was missing. She suggested that I start with the book P.S. I Love You so I ordered it and started reading it. It is still sitting unfinished on the back of my toilet. It is my book of last resort when I have nothing else to read in the house. The characters just didn’t interest me and the storyline didn’t hold my attention.

I guess the moral of the story is that I can be influenced to pick up a book but I can’t be influenced to complete it. If I don’t like a book I usually know it almost immediately and I just don’t push myself to finish it. I very rarely find those kinds of books but I have chosen books for myself that were just not good enough to finish. I don’t know if peer pressure is what I would call this situation. I would call it taking suggestions that end up being wrong for me. Have any of you ever read a book you loved that you thought you wouldn’t or loved one you thought you would hate?
