Thanksgiving Pre-Trip Report

by janet on October 24, 2008

Now that I am 30 days away from leaving for my Thanksgiving Week trip to Disney I thought I would do a pre-trip report. We are a family of 5 that includes: Me (37), Husband (33) Daughter (7) Daughter (5) and Son (4). We will be staying at the Port Orleans Riverside Resort from November 21 – November 29. We were not supposed to be going on this trip this year but life has a funny way.

It all started when I was doing some planning for my October 2009 Wilderness Extravaganza Trip and I found out that Disney Chase Visa Rewards card was offering its members a discount at WDW for a room discount and free dining. As soon as I saw it and looked at the dates my mind started spinning. I knew that my only option was to go during Thanksgiving since any of the other times would mean pulling the kids from school. Now I am not necessarily opposed to pulling them out but we missed 5 days last year for Disney and we will be missing 4 days next year for Disney so I didn’t want to make it a habit. (Okay that sounded funny even to me. Of course it is a habit) However, I really didn’t want to go during December again this year since that is when we went last year. I also found it hard to get Christmas done when we went last year because I was planning the trip and then came back and it was time for Christmas. We couldn’t do October because it wouldn’t give us enough time to get things planned and pay for it. We don’t charge vacations so it meant saving.

I called my husband and after he audibly rolled his eyes he decided that he was all in. I called and scheduled it and we were set for 9 days and 8 nights at our favorite time of year. Positives beyond the fact we are going to be in Disney? We get to miss the yearly stress filled family dinner on Thanksgiving Day. Woohoo! I found new issues. Since free dining was being offered and we were 60 days or so out I had issues finding Advanced Dining Reservations. I did make some and they will be just fine for us even if they aren’t our favorites. Perhaps we will find new favorites. Besides, we will be back in October 2009 and I will be able to hit those at the 180 day mark and get all of the places we really love to eat.

I am really excited about staying at the Port Orleans Riverside. The kids have never stayed anywhere but the value resorts. My husband and I stayed at POR for our anniversary trip last year and we loved it. This will be such a fun thing for the kids and will be a step up from what they are used to. I am a little concerned about the time of year. My husband and I went at Thanksgiving our very first trip which was in 2000. We didn’t know anything back then and missed so many fun things to do but we had a great time anyway. I know how to avoid the crowds from doing research and I know we will have fun. I am just used to really slow times of the year. I just have to keep saying that we will be back very soon so if we miss something we will catch it next time. No big deal.

That is how the starts of our vacation came about. I have more to tell you guys but I will continue more later. For now just think that in 28 days I will leaving for Disney!
