Breaking Dawn Book Club Discussion Part 1

by janet on October 26, 2008

It is finally time. I have to say that it is with regret that I am started this last discussion on the Twilight Series. I feel like this series has been a major part of my life for the past few months. I have spent the largest part of that time criticizing the character of Bella. I disliked everything she was. She was weak and selfish and unworthy of the amazing people in her life. I can honestly say that this last book found me amazing at the person Bella had become. She grew in to the ‘person’ I expected her to be. I love that! I felt like she had finally come around to her full self.

I guess my first question would be if you like the new Bella better than the old one? Did you prefer her as the innocent Bella who meshed so well with Jacob or as the new strong Bella who really works now with Edward. I think I really found myself loving the new Bella. I felt her pain when she realized she would have to protect her unborn child. I was so impressed with her finally thinking beyond herself. I have to admit that I was thinking at one point that she should end it and go on with her perfect eternity with Edward. Then I realized that would be exactly the thing I would criticize if she had done.

What do you think about the Jacob imprinting on Renesmee? My first thought was EWWWWW and then I realized it isn’t a sexual thing. Imprinting has nothing to do with sexual feelings. It is all about protection and loyalty and wanting to be everything for that person. Once I considered it that way I realized it was a perfect situation. What better way to make Jacob happy without having him fall in love with someone else. What a perfect way to keep him in the family.

I have to say I especially loved the introduction of all of the other vampire covens and nomads. This brought so much ‘color’ and interest to the story. They each had an amazing and unique story of their own and they each made Bella a much more interesting character. Her interactions with them showed what an amazing character she could be even without Edward. Renesmee did this also. She made her mother be the person she was meant to be.

I love the child vampire Renesmee. I love that she is not vicious and evil. I love that she can be the best of both of her parents. This is ultimately what our children end up being isn’t it? They take the best of us and make something even more special than we could ever have been. I love that she has such wonderful abilities. She is sweet and honest and loving and caring. I was concerned when the first experience Bella has with her is that Renesmee bites her. I wanted to cry thinking that Meyer would take the child that way.

The storyline where Bella has to prepare things for the possibility that Renesmee and Jacob will flee together and her and Edward will be killed was heartbreaking to me. I love that she finally considered someone else more than herself. She didn’t hesitate to do what she needed to do for her child even if it meant she would never be with her again. I am even more amazed that she was willing to let her go with Jacob. She truly wanted happiness and a life for her child and best friend and put her own feelings on the side.

The confrontation at the end was perfect. It left me completely clueless as to what the outcome would be. The return of Alice was so joyful for me I could feel the joy Meyer was trying to get across. I was wishing I could hug Alice myself. She is by far my favorite character. She had so much spunk and interest and color from the very beginning. She was witty and fun!

How did you feel at the end? Do feel like you got all you wanted or do you feel like you are missing something? Do you wish you could find out what happens next? Do you think it all tied up nicely and you are content with where it went? I think Meyer left it open to be able to continue the story but I also think that she closed it all nicely so if she never wrote about these characters again I would feel like it was done. I was a little sad that it was over. I am however ready to move on. Twilight has been a wonderful experience and I am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried a new genre. Perhaps I will try some other new things eventually.

Please let me know what your thoughts are of this last book. I really would love to have some wonderful discussions about where this series started and where it ended up. Enjoy!

I’m intersted at your reaction. I felt that Breaking Dawn was falling into the sleazy vampire soap opera genre-between Renesme and Jacob writing a chapter, and the document guy.

The only parts I like were Alice, and I like finally getting Rosalie’s story.

I did feel that Breaking Dawn was the perfect conclusion to the saga as well. Of course, I like everything I watch and read tied up with a neat little bow. LOL!

My biggest problem was that I didn’t want it to end. I felt like I was missing something when I got done and had no more to read. I was so into Meyer’s world for weeks in a row and then I had no more.

I loved the whole series, I just jumped on this bandwagon the last few weeks and read all 4 books quickly, and then reread a lot of them as well as Stephanie Meyers partial online novel, “Midnight Sun”. I can’t wait for the Twilight movie, although I never like movies of my favorite books, this one looks promising.

Back to Breaking Dawn…I really liked the book and I agree with you Janet, that I loved the way Bella came out of herself to protect her child, her husband and her life. She changed from a whiny idealistic child, to a strong woman who would die to protect those she loves.

I also loved the way that Jacob imprinted on Renesemee, and I did guess that it would happen when he kept obsessing on when he would imprint and trying to go out and make it happen. I kept wondering how he could possibly imprint on anyone but Bella…and then it hit me that the baby HAD to be a girl so she could be the object of his imprinting. It worked out so well that he became happy and was still able to love Bella and be a part of her life. I loved the way it all works out for everyone in the end. I guess I’m just a sucker for a happy ending , SIGH.

I also miss the characters and am dying for my daughter who’s 13 to finish the series so we can talk about it. We’re planning a mother daughter movie night to see Twilight. I’m glad I found you guys, I was wondering if any sunshiners were into this series and then I saw Trisha’s post the other day about her “Isle Esme” shirt.
