Health Insurance Worries

by janet on November 1, 2008

I have seen so much talk lately about health insurance and what each of the candidates plan to do about it if they are elected. As a young adult I never really worried about health insurance. I had it because I got it through my job but I never used it except for my yearly visits to the OBGYN.

Now that I am a parent it is much more in the forefront of my thoughts. I have seen the costs that can be associated with paying for health care and treatment for my children. We have a health insurance program through my husband’s work and it covers things pretty well. We don’t have to worry about whether or not we can bring out children to the doctor’s office if they are sick.

At the same time I know that there are people out there who have these worries. People who can’t get employer provided health care. Louisiana and North Carolina health insurance programs as well as those in other states are sometimes not within reach for some families. I know in Louisiana we have a health care system for children and pregnant woman who are low income. It is an amazing program and assures that both groups are very well cared for an receive all of the care they need at little to no cost. My concern is for the people who are not low income but still can’t afford insurance premiums. How do they get care? There should be a program set up where the insurance can be attained and the pricing is dependent on income and family size. Why not allow people to pay lower insurance premiums if they are lower income but do not fall in to the low income levels established by the government insurance programs.

Now I am not talking about government run insurance programs. I want to be able to choose the insurance I want and can afford. I am talking about helping those who can’t afford to choose insurance at all. We have so many programs set up for reimbursement of school expenses so kids can go to better schools. We have programs to reimburse for childcare. We have a lot of options for so many needs. This should be one we are putting to the forefront. Health insurance is so terribly important so no one should be left without coverage they can afford.
