Facebook Mania

by janet on February 6, 2009

I ventured in to the world of Facebook many months ago. I did it because a bunch of my Disney friends were doing it and it provided another way for us to communicate besides forums and AIM. It was enjoyable at first but I didn’t really keep up with it much. Then all of a sudden friends from my past starting contacting me through Facebook. I have ‘talked’ to people I haven’t seen in 15 years and honestly, I love it.

It is a great way to connect with old friends that doesn’t require a lot of time or commitment. You don’t have the awkwardness of face to face meetings with people you aren’t sure you will still have things in common with. It lets you get caught up on each others lives from your own home and be done with it.

I can’t tell you how many people I have reconnected with and it has been great fun. I do have to say though that Facebook could be a breeding ground for people who want to take advantage of young people. I only accept friend invites from people I know or once knew. Teens aren’t quite so selective so I can see where it could lead to very bad things.

I have seen recent news articles about teens being taken advantage of through Facebook. In the end it is not the fault of the web site that these things happen. There will always be people willing to take advantage of a situation. I just ask that parents monitor their children when it comes to Facebook. It really is the only way for parents to know what their kids are doing. One thing I learned about Facebook is that everyone your friends with and everyone they are friends with will know what is happening in your life. Being on Facebook and friending your child will go a long way toward knowing what they are doing and who they are talking to.
