I get so nervous at this time of year. The kids are wanting to swim and play outside. We go to the beach and water parks. There are so many things we do at this time of the year that posses dangers that could put us in a position to need to save the life of one of our children.
One of the things I always try to do each year is get myself prepared and informed about what I need to know to protect my children or provide them care if an accident occurs. One of the most important things a parent can do is to learn and be certified in CPR. Knowing how to properly administer CPR can make all the difference between saving a child and losing one.
One of the things I have seen lately that is being kept at places where there are swimmers is a machine called an AED which is an Automated External Defibrillator. These machines can be used to provide a shock to a person who needs it in an emergency. The best thing is that these machines are easy to use and they are basically fool proof. The machine takes the vital signs and decides whether or not the patient needs a shock and only provides one if it is needed. The person who is using the machine doesn’t need to be concerned that they will accidentally shock someone who doesn’t actually need it.
There are even courses now that people can take that will teach them not only CPR but how to use the AED machines. These courses will teach you that the first action should always be to call 911, then administer CPR and then use the AED when necessary. By giving people the information needed to help in an emergency these courses are increasing the chances that the injured person will survive with little to no long term effects.
I am a firm believer that these machines need to be in schools, sporting venues, swimming pool areas, camp sites and anywhere else that people could find themselves in danger and in the need of help. I hope you guys all have a happy and safe summer!
