Now that I have entered the world of wine clubs, I am learning so many new things! Recently I spent hours researching Chardonnay, learned what people do with leftover wine corks (thank you, Pinterest!) and did a WSJ Wine Club Review. While I am not really learning a lot about tasting wine, I am learning about how to buy it. One of the questions I have encountered on a lot of websites is whether to buy wine clubs by the case.
Essentially you can buy wine clubs in a couple of different ways. First, you can have a set number of bottles sent a month for X number of months. That number is usually between 1 and 3. Second, you can have an entire case delivered each quarter, often for about the same price. How do you choose between them?
It was my experience doing the WSJ (Wall Street Journal) wine club review that the wine by the case was not as high quality as the monthly shipments that I get. That being said, the price was definitely lower per bottle and it’s not like I am used to drinking $30 bottles of wine on a regular basis. I usually buy wine in the $8-10 a bottle range, which is exactly what I got with the WSJ case club. The other benefit was that I got a lot of different types of wine all at once and can now choose when I drink each. I may need something heavy and red for a particular meal but then want something light and white the next night. With the case club, I am going to have more on hand to choose from (at least initially).
Of course, all of this is assuming that you are buying the wine for yourself and not as a gift. If you are comparing wine clubs for gift giving, you will have more to think about. Buying wine clubs can be a little bit confusing but once you start looking into them, you will discover how terrific they are!
