As your pet ages, they can become arthritic just like humans, especially the larger breed dogs. They will display signs of moving about slower, slower to get up, not wanting to walk as long a distance as before, heavy panting and sometimes limping. These are all signs of arthritis. Arthritis can set in the knees, back, neck, elbows or elsewhere on the body. The only way to be absolutely sure that it is arthritis is to have your vet xray your pet.
There are ways to control arthritis pain and gain more movement. First off, weight is an important issue. While its important for your pet to exercise so that they do not become overweight, and build muscle mass, it is also important to do this in moderation. A good balanced healthy diet and moderate exercise is the key. Also, a good joint vitamin, preferably started before the onset of arthritis is most effective in helping to lessen the pain and increase their movement. Look for Cosequin DS or Glycoflex at Petco or Pet Care RX or other pet stores. These can also be purchased at your vet for a little extra money.
Giving your pet aspirin can also help with the pain, but should be given in moderation to avoid stomach upset or intestinal bleeding. Ascriptin has a maalox type coating and is much easier on the stomach and can be purchased at any drugstore. Dermax and Rimadyl can be purchased at your veterinary office and lessen the chances of stomach upset and help extremely well with the pain.
Don’t let your pet suffer. There are too many helpful drugs and joint vitamins to help them, but even better, start them on the vitamin supplement before they get to this stage, and possibly avoid it altogether.
