Chemotherapy VS Herbal Healing for your pet

by cindy on November 25, 2007

My 10 year old German Shephard was recently diagnosed with transitional cell carcinoma. We aren’t exactly sure of the area, but suspect urethra, or prostate, but leaning toward urethra. It was fluke that we even found it. Hes always been very healthy rescue of mine, but a cumbersome UTI (urinary tract infection) forced me to see the vet after a month of  different ineffective antitibiotics. I figured a urine culture was in order to find exactly which antibiotic was needed. While visiting the vet,  she palpated my pet and felt a  large grape like nodular mass. She aspirated it the best she could and sent the cells off. We weren’t completely comfortable with that diagonsis ( I suspect since it was a small needle aspirate it would have been difficult to diagnoze carcinoma vs hyperplasia difinitively) so an ultrasound was performed and a needle stuck directly into the mass for cells to be bioposied, and the same results came back.  In the meantime, suspecting that it is cancerous, I researched several methods on the net for a possible cure, or at least some longevity for keeping the tumor small. Theres not a lot of hope out there, and outside of just keeping him comfortable for as long as possible, the only other alternative is mitroxanthrone (chemo) along with piroxicam, or is it? This isn’t a cure, its just to prolong the inevitable, but along the way, taking chances of, it not working at all, or making your pet sick while getting a slow IV drip every 3-4  weeks, or doing damage to other organs,  for me, not a good alternative. I did however find one more, herbs. Yes, herbal medications. I was put in touch with a website called herbal healers, and the veterinarian seems extremely knowledgeable, you can write her with your questions. So, this is the way we are going. My beloved pet gets 4 Herb Tea 3-4 times a day, colidal silver once a day, a pancreas supplement, a liver supplement and a piroxicam. The herbal doctor says its a hard regimen, but if I follow it, he will get better.  My husband says we have to have some sort of plan for curing or prolonging his cancer to hang our hat on, so this is the choice we’ve made. Now, its a wait and see game. So far, hes feeling fantastic, he picked up almost 10 lbs and has a lot of energy. I’m hoping its not the calm before the storm.
