Dremmel or Cut

by cindy on December 4, 2007

I’ve been reading a lot lately about people wanting their dogs nails dremmeled or doing it themselves. Since its become so popular in the show world, its now becoming popular with the family pets. There are a lot of groomers and veterinary clinics that will do this for you instead of just cutting your dogs nails with clippers. This takes the edges off so they don’t scratch you as easily like after a normal nail clipping. But, the question is, how safe is it. In my experience, its not something a novice should try to do without professional guidance, infact, it can even be a little scary for those who are experienced. Getting down close, but not into the quick is a trick. If you so much as nick that quick, you are opening your pet up to infection. It can happen when a groomer does it or even the veterinary clinic.

To me, the safest alternative is to get yourself some of those heavy duty emory boards, the kind that are used for fake nails. Directly after your pet has his nails cut, or if you do it yourself, smooth them down with the emory board. Since its not noisy, and they can’t feel it, most pets don’t even care. Just sit on the floor in front of the tv and play with their foot and file off the edges. They will love the special attention, and you will love the feel of the nice smooth edges.

Ahhh very interesting. I have become quite used to clipping & was thinking of a dremmel. Thanks for the other option. I’ll for sure try that out!
