Ater the vet check last night, it was determined that he certainly has arthiritis in his hocks. The right hock being worse then the left, and needed to be addressed right away. The hock on the horse is comparable to the knee of a person. Since hes old, and we don’t have a lot of time to wait for this hock to fuse, we decided that an injection of a steriod directly into the joint was our best alternative. He was so good for it. We didn’t need to sedate him at all, just a twitch and he stood still, well, pretty still. It took the vet a few times to get the needle just where he wanted, but he had great success with it, which can sometimes be very difficult on these old horses. We won’t know if it will work for a few days, but in the meantime we have him on Bute for pain. I’m mixing the Bute with Maalox to help keep his stomach from getting to irritated. The weather is suppose to be warm from tomorrow on, so that will also be a factor in helping with the pain. We can only hope now that this works. Even if its not permanent, even if it only lasts for 6 months or so, we can do it again and maybe in the meantime the hock can fuse somewhat on its own. Today he is standing, he actually got up quite quickly when I told him too, and ran away from me. I think he thought I was going to shove those herbs down his throat again. Not now…that will come later today.
