There is more to dressing your pet for Halloween then just picking out a costume you like and putting it on them. Depending on your pet’s size, confirmation, temperament and age, you will need to pick a costume that best suits them.

Naturally you don’t want to put a costume with a hat that lays flat on dogs head that has ears that stand up. You also don’t want to put a heavy costume on a smaller or older dog, or any type of costume that is going to restrict their eye sight.

Also, if your pet doesn’t have the temperament for dressing up, don’t force them. Usually a dog that has not been accustomed to it won’t be really thrilled and can be a bit more edgy then normal anyway with all the other Halloween activities going on. It’s best to start when your pup is young to get them use to wearing costumes. Don’t force your dog to wear a costume if they really don’t want to. Put a Halloween bandana on them or ribbon in their hair to show their Halloween spirit as an alternative.

Also, if you are taking your dog trick or treating, be sure to take an extra bag with you for clean up, and don’t mix up the bags!!

It’s getting to be that time of year again when we are preparing for Football season. Flags are being hung outside the house, stickers and license plates and magnets are being put on the cars and menu planning for kickoff is starting. Lets not forget our four legged friends this year when getting ready.

Dogs love squeaky toys, and as a parent, we love to watch them play with their squeaky toys. We laugh at their antics and delight in how much fun they are having, but, have you ever stopped to think what could happen if your dog gets the little squeaker out and swallows it.

The squeakers can get lodged in your dogs throat causing them to choke or even be swallowed causing gastric upset or even worse. 

So, now you ask why you should even let them have a squeaky toy. 

You all know dogs are natural hunters and prey on smaller animals. In the wild, the dogs would hunt down their prey, which were hiding and making little squeaky noises. This enabled the dogs to better find their prey and gave them much satisfaction after capturing it. 

To this day, the instinct is still within them, and that is why we think they love their squeaky toys so much. Not only does playing with the toy give them some self satisfaction, it also stimulates their brain and keeps them occupied for quite awhile while addressing their chewing instinct.  

One squeaky toy though that I have found to recommend is the Air Kong Squeaker Donut Toy. The squeaker is hidden. For some reason while dogs are playing with their squeaky toys, they seem to go right for the squeaker and pull it out. With the squeaker hidden, this certainly makes it more difficult and the donut is really pretty tough. 

While no squeaky toy is going to be completely indestructible, some are certainly made to with stand the vigorous exercise workout some dogs and puppies will give them like the Air Kong Squeaker Donut Toy. 

As an added precaution it’s just always best to let them play with their squeaky toy when you are around to watch them

I’ve been hearing a lot of chatter recently from people who would like to have a monkey or chimp as a pet. They see them on TV and think how cute they are, or in the zoos they see them interacting with one another and its adorable, or that cute baby monkey you see. There is no denying, they are cute little creatures, but, they can also be deadly or quite difficult to handle.

The fact is most of the chimps or monkeys you see on TV are babies or adolescents. The reason being is that as they get older, they become more demanding and harder to control. We all know how intelligent they are, but did you know that they become 7 times as strong as a human being, so, literally, if they don’t want to do something, they aren’t going to do it. Biting and scratching is natural behavior for these pets and raising them in captivity will not eliminate that. Also, they require special diets, not just your local supermarket canned pet food.

Finding a place to keep the monkey or chimp in your house would be difficult too. By nature, they like to swing and jump and you would need a very large dedicated area to keep them in. Interaction with other primates is almost a necessity, however, if you raise them from being a baby, they will find it difficult to know exactly how to interact with other primates, which makes it difficult for those primates that are given to sanctuaries when they are older and the owner realizes that they can no longer control this once cute baby.

Disease is also another risk. Monkeys and Chimps do carry quite a number of fungal, bacterial and parasitic diseases. Herpes B, salmonella, monkey pox and tuberculosis are among them. Almost all of the macaque monkeys carry the deadly Herpes B virus, which can be transmitted to humans through bites and scratches. Approximately 90% of those infected get encephalomyelitis and 75% of those result in death. Humans can also transmit diseases to monkeys and chimps such as pox, meningitis and hepatitis.

It is illegal to import primates into the US for pet trade, however, in other countries, many of the primates that serve as pets are captured in the wild and because the thought of owning a cute pet monkey is still high, the demand for them is still great.

After buying horse blanket after horse blanket from the most popular online pet supply stores, I decided to get one fromPawsUpPetSupply.  I have to share with all of you that have wasted hundreds of dollars over the years on poor quality horse blankets that I have finally found one that is truly fantastic.

My test of a good horse blanket is to put it on my old guy for 24 hours and see how it holds up. Well, this Tough Rider held up fantastic. It didn’t slip off or slide around underneath him one bit. The little bit of dirt that had accumlated on it was brushed off easily. Its waterproof and breathable, which is exactly what I need for him. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am with this blanket. When I worked at the veterinary clinic often times a special food would be recommended for cats and dogs that had allergies. I use to think that Lamb and rice was the way to go, but I think since its been sold over the counter for so many years that dogs have even developed an allergy to that. The one that seems to be of choice now is duck and potatoe. I only knew of a couple manufacturers that made this and they were all only available at veterinary offices.

I was extremely surprised when I was online looking at a company called Pet Nutrition Products that they carried the potatoe and duck food. This all natural food is quite a bit cheaper then I remember it being at the veterinary clnics, so I wanted to pass this along. If your pet has allergies, check this food out. Yesterday I went to Petsmart to pick up some cat and dog food for my pets. I looked all around the cat food aisle for my favorite cat food and was really having a hard time finding it. I know exactly where it should be kept. Its the low magnesium blue and white bag. Finally, there it was, with a whole new look. The packaging is quite attractive now, but the price seemed to be even higher then before. Oh well, I need it, so I bought it and took it home.

Once I got home, I started pouring it into the container that I always store it in, and it just didn’t seem right. There wasn’t enough there. Strange. It usually fills up the container, plus more. This prompted me to look at the bag, and there it was, in the corner, 16.8 lbs. So, that was why the new design. It certainly throws off looking for the weight, which was always 18lbs before. Not only is there less in the bag, but the price was higher. Needless to say, I am quite a bit disturbed at Friskies for taking advantage of the public this way. Again, a large company that deceives the public. Ya, I know, its there in plain sight, but, I’m not in the habit of checking the poundage of something that I’ve been buying for years and years, but I will be now. So, buyer beware, this is probably the first of many pet foods that will be doing the same thing.
